CATA welcomes Dorothy Clay Sims and Dr. Oregon K. Hunter, MD as its Featured speakers for this year’s institute!  This year’s Institute will be held on APRIL 29, 2021 from 1:00pm-4:00pm via Zoom (3 CLE HOURS).

Dorothy Clay Sims authored the best selling book Exposing the Deceptive Defense Doctor. She has given over 400 speeches internationally on cross-examination and is the only lawyer in the U.S. who specializes in assisting other lawyers cross-examine doctors.  Sims has been interviewed on multiple television shows including Greta Van Susteren, In Sessions, and Piers Morgan.

She has also authored chapters in books with individuals such as David Ball and Don Keenan as well as Dr. Michael Freeman. Dorothy donates a percentage of her book profits various organizations including the American Association for Justice and the International Federation for Human Rights.

Spinal Injury Cases, Session Five: Cross-Examining Defense Experts - O – Trial Guides

Oregon K. Hunter, Jr, MD is board certified in Rehabilitation Medicine, with special interest in TBI and pain. His forensic activity included expert testimony in thousands or workers compensation, personal injury and medical malpractice cases.  He has spoken extensively & published a number of chapters and articles in multiple medical journals and co-authored the Florida Impairment Rating Guide.

Currently licensed in California, (previously Florida & Hawaii), he is one of the only Physicians in the US to is limit his practice to forensic medical consultation..

TOPICS WILL INCLUDE:

Cross-examination techniques in general.
Ms. Sims and Dr. Hunter will teach attendees various methods in exposing dishonest experts as discussed in her book and walk attendees through role playing and how to use them in their own practice.

Cross-examining the specialist.
Ms. Sims show attendees how to understand various medical/psychiatric/psychological/scientific conditions in a forensic environment and how to use this information in cross-examination. She teaches where to find codes of ethics governing various specialists and how to use them in cross-examination. These experts include but are not limited to:

  •  Orthopedists
  •   Neuropsychologists
  •  Traumatic Brain Injuries experts

Being proactive with the defense’s strategy.
Dorothy also teaches typical types of positions taken by the other side and how to address them such as:

In a disability or injury case, the opposing expert claims:

  • The injury was too minor to cause the problem
  • The patient is exaggerating
  • The condition will go away
  • The condition did go away and the patient is now exhibiting pre-existing   psychological problems
  • The patient has somatoform disorder
  • The patient has an injury but the injury/condition is not causing the pain
  • The patient will need little to no future medical care

How to do background searches on forensic experts and what to do with information obtained.

Ms. Sims and Dr. Hunter will show attendees where to find helpful background information, verify board certifications and research as to educational deficits that can make or break a case.
